Epistemic Hubris
Have you heard this from someone recently? That “WE CANNOT KNOW, with certainty, what God has revealed so anyone who thinks he does is proud? We must, rather, (they say) embrace God as mystery?”
In light of this shouldn’t we be asking the following: Is not this assertion itself a dogma with affirmations and denials? Is not this itself a statement of knowledge? Is “we cannot know with certainty” not itself an assertion of KNOWLEDGE (a dogmatic assertion) as THE WAY to look at Scripture? Whether conscious of it or not, this is what is called “double-talk” and those who believe this are doing the very thing they claim to despise, even in the very speaking of it.

Oh, please.
Someone says “I think you don’t know,” and instead of showing that you do, and how you do, you say, “ah, you can’t prove I don’t!” What are you, a two year old?
And you, lowly you, who claim to know of the Supreme Creator of the Universe, claim that the person who questions this is guilty of hubris?
Cast the beam out of thine own eye.
What a shameful display.
You suck at this game.

We humans are, in general ,quite good at not following our own rules, especially when it comes to attacking others. Unfortunately, we as Christians do a poor job of being consistent as well. We certainly should speak up and point out inconsistencies in the arguments of those who attack us. The apologists of the 2nd century did no less. Yet we must also be careful that we do not look like the world in the way relate to it. Your post encourages me to watch my words carefully. Thanks.

Scaryreasoner,
Really? I think you missed the point.

Wow, scaryreasoner really is a scary reasoner. I’m gonna back up the pastor on this one. One group says “you dont know cause nobody knows” and another says. “how do you know that nobody knows just becuase it isnt you who knows?” Thats two year old banter? Make sure you understand the post before you argue against it as being a “shameful display”
